General information
Meteora is a stunning rock formation in central Greece, home to one of the largest and most dramatically situated complexes of Eastern Orthodox monasteries, second only to Mount Athos in significance. Six of the original twenty-four monasteries are perched on towering natural pillars and rounded boulders that dominate the landscape. This awe-inspiring site is located near the town of Kalabaka, on the northwestern edge of the Plain of Thessaly, close to the Pineios River and the Pindus Mountains.
Meteora is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized under criteria I, II, IV, V, and VII for its exceptional cultural and natural significance.
