General information
The Ancient Theater of Dodoni is located just 22 km from the city of Ioannina, the Ancient Theater of Dodoni is deeply connected to the sacred games held in honor of Zeus. During the Roman era, the theater was repurposed as an arena for gladiator battles, animal fights, and duels. It is believed to have been constructed in the 3rd century BC, during the reign of Pyrrhus of Epirus. Restoration efforts began in 1875 after the theater was damaged and continue to this day.
As one of the largest ancient theaters in Greece, it could accommodate up to 17,000 spectators. The theater’s design takes advantage of the natural slope at the foot of Mount Tomaros, using limestone as the primary building material.
