General information
Nikopolis, meaning “City of Victory”, is likely the largest ancient city in Greece, yet remains relatively unknown to many. Situated about eight kilometers from Preveza in Epirus, it was founded by the Roman Emperor Octavian after his decisive victory at the Battle of Actium over Antony and Cleopatra of Egypt.
The city’s vast size and impressive, well-preserved walls are truly remarkable. Inside the archaeological site, you’ll discover numerous fascinating monuments. Additionally, the Archaeological Site of Nikopolis is included in the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Greece.
